Exploring Risks of Repeated Head Impacts in Youth and Strategies to Minimize Exposure: A Workshop
Repeated head impacts in youth can occur during sports and recreational activities, as well as in other situations. This raises concerns about whether there is a relationship between experiencing such head impacts and the future well-being of affected children. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a virtual public workshop on April 15-16 to explore the state of the evidence on risks and implications of exposure to repeated head impacts in children and adolescents, focusing on what is known about their effects on the developing brain and long-term outcomes. The event will highlight current research on neurobiological changes, cognitive and functional impacts, and prevention strategies. Discussions will address who is exposed to repeated head impacts as well as evidence-based prevention approaches.
