Karen has been involved in graduate education administration for almost 20 years, serving in multiple roles from program director to Interim Dean. She has worked to promote healthy and respectful training environments for all graduate students at her institution through the development of robust policies and guidelines that are clear and transparent as well as the implementation of systems that help students and faculty members anticipate, prevent, and resolve conflicts. She has also led initiatives focused on enhancing graduate student wellbeing and effective mentoring using the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research “Entering Mentoring” curriculum. She is the Deputy Research Integrity Officer and part of the Faculty Affairs team. She is also Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Anatomy, where she maintains a research program and serves as a mentor to postdocs and graduate students.
