Continuing the Conversation: Openness and Global Perspectives in Communicating About Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals
Join the BAHSCR Roundtable on Science and Welfare of Animals Involved in Research for a 60-minute webinar that continues the conversation sparked by the National Academies’ December 2023 workshop, Effective Communication with the General Public About Scientific Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals.
This session focuses on what “openness” looks like in practice. Speakers from the U.S. and abroad will share concrete examples of how institutions are translating communication principles into real policies, materials, and engagement approaches, shaped by different regulatory environments and cultural expectations. We will explore how organizations are building trust through proactive, two-way dialogue that is plain-spoken, values-aware, and grounded in ethical considerations.
Through short “flash talk” case studies and a moderated discussion, participants will hear what institutions have changed to increase transparency, what enabled those changes, and what lessons may be adaptable in other settings. The session will also highlight international frameworks such as the UK Concordat on Openness on Animal Research and related efforts, alongside U.S.-based openness initiatives.
