Spatial Patterns of Groundwater Use and Depletion in Transboundary Aquifers
Webinar Title: Spatial Patterns of Groundwater Use and Depletion in Transboundary Aquifers
In this webinar, Dr. Marc F. Müller of the Eawag – Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology and the United Nations University will discuss his research on groundwater use and depletion in internationally shared aquifers. Drawing on insights from game theory and long-term data from more than 100,000 wells, he examines whether transboundary aquifers experience faster depletion and greater groundwater use near international borders.
Dr. Müller will present the first global assessment of groundwater depletion in shared aquifers and explore how patterns of groundwater use near borders are influenced by hydrogeography—including the co-location of rivers, alluvial plains, and irrigation infrastructure—rather than competitive overuse. He will also introduce a typology of country pairs based on border-zone groundwater use to help identify high-risk regions and inform cooperative groundwater governance.
