External Review of Environmental, Biosafety, and Biosecurity Considerations for Synthetic Cell Research and Development: Report Release Webinar
Join us for a webinar introducing a new report on the biosafety, biosecurity, and environmental considerations of synthetic cell research and development. The webinar will be held virtually on April 29, 2026, from 1:00–2:00 p.m. (ET).
The National Academies are hosting a public webinar marking the release of a new report that examines the biosafety, biosecurity, and environmental considerations of synthetic cell research and development and outlines a national strategy to support responsible innovation across potential synthetic cell designs and applications.
Synthetic cells represent a rapidly advancing frontier in engineering biology, offering new ways to understand life and enabling applications across health and medicine, environmental management, sustainable manufacturing, agriculture, and beyond. At the same time, the wide range of synthetic cell systems and potential uses raises important questions about how risks and benefits may emerge and how existing governance systems can assess and manage them effectively. During the webinar, members of the study committee will provide an overview of the report and discuss key themes, including the current governance landscape, areas of uncertainty, and considerations for future oversight.
The webinar will include a moderated discussion and an opportunity for audience questions and answers.
