Enabling DOE Regional Energy-Water Technology Pilots - Public Release
America’s energy and water systems are deeply interconnected—and increasingly strained. This public release of a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Enabling DOE Regional Energy-Water Technology Pilots offers guidance on how to thoughtfully design a pilot program that can help strengthen resilience across both systems.
As extreme weather intensifies, electricity demand grows, including from data centers, and infrastructure continues to age, communities across the country face mounting and often interrelated challenges. The report highlights the need for coordinated, regionally tailored approaches that reflect local conditions and priorities. It outlines how DOE can design a portfolio of pilot projects that combines technological innovation with improved data and understanding of challenges, cross-sector coordination, and adaptive management strategies to better anticipate risks.
