Research can uncover new treatments and cures for diseases, help predict natural hazards, develop new technologies that improve our quality of life, or provide a better understanding of ourselves and the society we live in. In order to ensure the integrity of the fruits of research and maintain public trust, engaging in the systematic pursuit of knowledge comes with a longstanding foundation of professional and ethical responsibilities. On Being a Scientist introduces the principles and practices of ethical and responsible conduct of research to early career researchers and students in all disciplines and fields, helping guide behavior in a rapidly changing scientific landscape. Previously published in 1989, 1995, and 2009, this updated guide builds on past editions to reflect changes in the research enterprise relevant to the conduct of research and to address professional conduct that limits or harms research talent and research advancement. The guide can be used in formal settings, such as orientations and courses, and in research groups to stimulate discussions as well as for individual readings and reflections.
