Water-energy-food nexus in the interstate Chesapeake Bay watershed: U.S. - Africa SustainFood Collaborative Learning School 2024

Fifteen early career researchers from North America, Europe, and Africa, working in natural and social sciences, participated in a two-week hands-on Collaborative Learning School (CLS) to develop a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding resource management and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay watershed is the largest estuary in the United States, receiving water from five major rivers across six states on the East Coast. It supports a unique estuarine ecosystem, providing essential food and water resources for 18 million people and serving as a habitat for diverse native flora and fauna. Human activities such as agriculture, industry, and urbanization in the upstream states contribute significant amounts of nutrients and sediments to the Bay each year, negatively affecting its water quality. CLS participants worked with local, state, and regional stakeholders on approaches to improve the ecological health of the Bay.
