Navigating the Current Legal Landscape for Addressing and Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

This session will discuss the current state of the legal landscape in higher education for addressing and preventing sexual harassment. It will consider how executive orders, federal agency actions and guidance, conflicting state and federal policy, and ongoing lawsuits are changing the landscape, including how issues related to Title VI enforcement may be affecting and overlapping with efforts related to Title IX and Title VII within higher education institutions. In addition to providing information on the current state, panelists will also discuss strategies for how higher education institutions are navigating the current landscape to maintain efforts to prevent and address sexual harassment in higher education.

Tables will be labeled with different discussion topics reflecting various areas of interest. Attendees will choose a table with a topic that aligns with their work or interests and join others to exchange experiences, share resources, and build connections. The discussion groups will be unmoderated to allow attendees to network informally and based on the interests of those attending.

We encourage virtual attendees to utilize the "Attendee Directory" for virtual networking.

Panelists will discuss how these behaviors, and particularly bullying in higher education, impact the well-being, development, and retention of research trainees, and share about institutional efforts to address this wider range of behaviors. Strategies for communication, early intervention, accountability, and support will be shared. The conversation will be informed in part by insights from the 2021 AAMC Report on the Appropriate Treatment of Research Trainees and reflect work done in response to the AAMC report.
